Download and install OpenOffice 2.4 on a Windows computer

Both the new 2.4 version and previous versions of OpenOffice can be on one computer at the same time. When you download a new version of OpenOffice, it replaces the older versions of OpenOffice and you keep all your personal OpenOffice files from the earlier version.

You may want to print this page so that you can follow the step-by-step instructions. (Click File > Print > OK)

Downloading can take 3 or more hours on a 56k dial-up connection and sometimes longer if the server is busy. If you have a dial-up connection consider purchasing a CD. One source we like is www.edmunds-enterprises.com They have OpenOffice 2.4 for $0.99 (US) plus $1.50 (US) shipping

The following are the steps used to download and install 2.4:

  1. First, connect to the Internet. When on the Internet, replace the http:// address that is there with the OpenOffice.org address. (The Address Box is the wide, flat box that contains an address that starts with http://.) (To replace the address, click anywhere on the address then type www.openoffice.org. Press Enter. (The "OpenOffice.org: Home" page" appears.)

  2. Click on “I want to download OpenOffice.org”. (The “Opening OOo_2.4.0_Win32Intel_install_wJR...” window " appears on your screen)
  3. Click Save File. (You will see that the file is being downloaded onto your computer) When the download is completed, close all windows so you see the desktop.
  4. On your desktop there will be the downloaded file that has the OpenOffice logo with the words OOo_2... written under the logo. Right-click on the OpenOffice logo then click Open. (The OpenOffice.org 2.4 Installation window appears) Click Next. Click Unpack. (The OpenOffice.org 2.4 Installation window appears)
  5. Click Next. Scroll down to read the license. Select I agree with the terms in the license agreement. Click Next.

  6. Enter a User name. (normally your name.) Under "Install this application for:", select Either "Anyone who uses this computer (all users)" Or "Only for me". Click Next.
  7. "Complete" installation is already selected. Click Next.

  8. Under “File Type” Select the file types that OpenOffice.org 2.4. will automatically open. There are 3 choices (Microsoft Word Documents, Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets, and Microsoft Power Point Presentations.)

  9. IF a check-mark IS NOT placed in the boxes , Microsoft Office will be used to open a Microsoft Office document.

  10. IF a check-mark IS placed in the boxes, OpenOffice will open Microsoft files into the OpenOffice file format. Microsoft Word and Microsoft Office can still open your Microsoft files into the Microsoft file format. More information is available in our tutorial "Microsoft Word files". (Click here if you would like to see that tutorial now. To get back to this tutorial, use your browser button .)

  11. Click Next. Click Install. Wait until you get a message that the installation is completed. Click Finish.

  12. To start OpenOffice, click Start > All Programs > OpenOffice 2.4 > OpenOffice.org Writer. The "Welcome to OpenOffice.org 2.4" window appears. Click Next. Click Scroll Down. Click Accept.

  13. Some people enter a First name and a Last name. Some people in a corporation environment do not enter their name. Check Next. (The "Online Update" window appears. "Check for updates automatically" has been selected and can be changed) Next (The "OpenOffice.org Registration" window appears)

  14. Many users register, however, you can freely use OpenOffice without registering. For this tutorial select "I want to register now". Click Finish. A User Survey will appear on the screen. (You may have to delete "Untitled1 - OpenOffice.org Writer" to see the survey.) Look at the survey and then decide if you want to do the survey.
